Most COMET CD-ROM Based CBL modules are installed to run off your CD-ROM drive with a minimum of files kept locally on your hard disk. To install modules (Windows 95/98/NT4.0 is shown), follow the steps below. Several questions (for which answers may not be obvious) are asked by the installation program. We offer explanations/comments for those choices below. (Note: Windows 3.1x users should replace step 1 by clicking "File/Run" from the menu bar in Program Manager.)

Step 1: Click Start on the Task Bar, then click Run.

Step 2: In the Run/Open window, type in the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by ":\Setup.exe". You may also use the Browse button to locate the CD-ROM drive and setup program. Once the correct filename is entered, click OK. Clicking Cancel will abort the installation.

Step 3: Click Yes to install the module. (No is merely an abort in case the module title you see is NOT what you want to install.)

Step 4: This screen will vary depending on your current screen resolution. The message at right is generated if you are in any resolution other than 640x480x65K colors. You can install the module while running in any resolution. The message (right) states the resolution you should be running in to view the module. Marine Meteorology actually requires (won't run unless you comply) that you be running in 640x480 at a minimum of 65K colors. Unless you want to abort installation, click Yes regardless of your current screen resolution.

Step 5: Select the drive to which you wish to install the module. Normally, this will be your "C:" drive.

Step 6: This menu screen is where you select the component to install. For first time module installation, the top choice (default) is the module to be installed. Other options in this menu that may be installed or re-installed include Video for Windows (re-install this if movies/animations aren't playing or you have audio and no video or have video and no audio) and the COMET Windows Administration Program. For initial module installation, simply click OK.

Step 7: Click Yes to install the module. You will see pop-up windows indicating that old version files are being deleted and files are being copied to your disk drive.

Step 9: If you are installing on a Windows95 machine, click Yes. If you are installing on a Windows 3.1x machine (for the first time), click Yes. If you are re-installing on a Windows 3.1x machine, click No. If you click Yes, you will have multiple icons for the module; you can delete the extra ones.

Step 10: Always click Yes.

Step 11: If you want to do something else (like install the COMET Windows Administration Program), click Yes. Otherwise, click No to return to Windows. Be sure to REBOOT (click Start on the Task Bar and select Shut Down/Restart in Windows 95 or exit Windows and press CTRL-ALT-DEL for Windows 3.1x) your computer as indicated before accessing the modules. Otherwise, the installation changes will not be realized and you will get system error messages when you try to access the module.

Step 12: NOTE: Use the last four digits of your SSN (or any 4-digit number) as the USERID when prompted by the CBL module logon screen. This number will identify you so that your progress can be monitored and stored for subsequent sessions. Two demo accounts (0000 and 9999) have been established that indicate module completion and may be used by anybody NOT desiring bookmarking/progress completion. If NO userid is specified, the "DEMO USER" account "0000" is selected by default.
Step 13: Install all applicable patches for the given module.
